  • On Tuesday 24th July, Dongguan City, represented by Mayor Yuan Baocheng, and Asan City, represented by Mayor Bok Ki-Wang, signed a memorandum of sisterhood.

During the signing ceremony, Yuan said that Dongguan and Asan shared many similarities. "Dongguan is a famous manufacturing city in China with approximately 38,000 industrial enterprises. The city's 2011 import and export values totalled US$134.7 billion. On a similar level, Asan is one of South Korea's crucial high-tech industry cities, with top level foreign exchange earnings coming from exports. Financially strong, Asan has developed high-tech industries and frequent ‘production, teaching and research’ activities," said Yuan.

Yuan added that there is promising future for Dongguan and Asan to cooperate on exchanges across industrial, economic and cultural areas. He hopes that both parties will establish sister-city relations sooner rather than later, so both parties will realise mutual benefits through shared strengths. "The signing of the memorandum indicates the beginning of love between the two cities," said Bok Ki-Wang.

At the ceremony, the Dongguan University of Technology also signed a "friendship-universities memorandum" with Asan's Hoseo University. The cooperation will begin with student exchange programs and converge towards establishing Korean as a major at the Dongguan University of Technology.

Preceding the ceremony, He Yu (Vice-Mayor of Dongguan) and Bok Ki-Wang together planted a monumental tree in Dongguan's Central Square representing the sisterhood between Dongguan and Asan.
